Thistle seed, also known as Niger seed, brings the sunny color of goldfinches, or American finches, to the home garden. Finches are also kept in cages as cheerful home companions. The majority of songbirds are in the finch family. Although the goldfinch is a favorite singer, all finches are welcome guests. Finches primarily eat small seeds and grains, requiring a nutritionally rich diet to maintain their health and vitality.

Finches love thistle seed. It is the main ingredient in most songbird food mixes and can be fed from sock, platform or tube feeders. However, finch seed alone is not enough to maintain optimum health.
